As a homeowner, you want to keep your home in the best shape possible. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the U.S. electricity consumption in 2020 was approximately a total of 3.8 trillion kWh, which is 13 times greater than the electricity use in 1950. It's important to notice some red flags on when you need to call an electrician. Here are different situations when calling an electrician is necessary.
It's not uncommon to experience a tripped circuit breaker occasionally, but consistent tripping of your circuit breaker is a red flag an electrician needs to address. Faulty wiring or an electricity overload are common culprits of consistent tripping circuit breakers. An electricity overload occurs when there are too many high-powered devices being used at the same time.
If you notice a burning smell and are having trouble identifying the source, there's a good chance the smell is coming from behind the walls. If you walk into one of your rooms and there is that persistent burning smell, but you can't find the source, then it must be coming from in the walls. The cause of the burning could be caused by old wiring or shirt circuits. If you are able to identify where the smell is coming from, it's most likely from a fuse box or electrical outlet. If this happens, immediately turn off the power and call an electrician.
Your primary service panel is the heart of the electricity in your home. If there are any signs of deterioration or visible damage, or wear and tear, such as rust, you need to call an electrician immediately. An electrician will be able to determine if you need to repair your service panel or have a new one installed.
Extension cords are beneficial. However, extension cords are not meant to be used for long periods. If you are using multiple extension cords in a room, this is a clear indication you don't have enough outlets in your home. Keep in mind, the number of outlets in your home need to be targeted to meet the needs of your family. A licensed electrician can install the necessary outlets in locations where they might be lacking.
A warm outlet or an outlet that is hot-to-the-touch is a sign of an overloaded circuit or faulty wiring. You need to notice if the outlet is warm all the time or only when you are powering a specific device. If the outlet is only warm when you power a specific device, this means the device requires a dedicated circuit. An electrician can properly assess and resolve the issue.
If you notice any of these electrical problems, don't hesitate to call a licensed electrician. You may be surprised at how much better your home will function with the proper electrical wiring and outlets.
